Morbidly obese and extremely overweight people may find that nothing works except for weight loss surgery, usually known as bariatric weight loss surgery. Don’t look at surgery if all you want to lose is a few pounds, not even if you need to lose 50 pounds! If you need to lose at least eighty pounds, however, surgery is an option worth thinking about.
There are various weight loss surgeries, but two are very common: restrictive surgery and malabsorptive surgery. In restrictive surgery, some of your stomach is separated from the rest; since the working stomach is now smaller, you fill up more quickly and therefore eat less. In malabsorptive surgery, your small intestine is either shortened or connected straight to the stomach so that your food does not digest completely. Either of the surgeries will help with weight loss, and undertaking both is certainly an option.
It’s important that you educate yourself about bariatric weight loss surgery before you decide because each sort has positives and negatives. Surgery isn’t all you can do: dieting, perhaps, or a vigorous exercise regimen. Weight loss surgery does mean you’ll lose weight, usually very quickly, and you’ll find that you live a better life afterward. But there are some cons and, possibly, some unintended effects when you undertake bariatric surgery.
As everyone knows, surgery is risky and puts the patient in danger. Deciding to have weight loss surgery means risking vomiting, weakness and faintness, gallstones, infections of the wound (especially if the surgery was performed improperly), and nutritional defects like anemia and osteoporosis. You’ll also need to make permanent, stringent changes in your lifestyle; you have to exercise regularly, diet, and take vitamin and mineral supplements. Since your digestive system is altered, you need to pay a lot of attention to everything. If you’re at least 80 pounds overweight you should seriously consider bariatric weight loss surgery. But consult your doctor before you do anything because your well-being should come first.
